Convicted killer's letter mocks court, prison systems

RALEIGH, N.C.,None — Danny Hembree appears to be taunting people from prison.

The words come from a handwritten letter he sent from his prison cell in Raleigh.

Hembree was sentenced to death in November for killing Heather Catterton in 2009. He admitted they did drugs and had sex before falling asleep, but claimed he woke up to find her dead.

Jurors did not believe him.

Now, in a prison letter, Hembree appears to mock the system, claiming his trial cost taxpayers $500,000. He said the chances of the death penalty being carried out in the next 20 years are slim.

In the meantime, he calls himself a man of leisure, watching TV in air conditioning, taking naps and eating well. He even boasts about the free medical care.

Hembree is charged with two other murders.

He is scheduled to go to trial in March for killing Catterton’s friend, Randi Saldona.

Prosecutors said they have a taped confession from him and plan to seek a second death penalty.
