CLAREMONT, N.C. — Prysmian North America’s plans for its Claremont facility are different today compared to just three years ago.
The Kentucky-based company considered expanding there in 2023 but ultimately chose not to, given market dynamics.
“The market for optical cables back then was very, very soft,” said Prysmian North America chief operating officer. “Really, the market was dormant then.”
It’s since exploded, Furtado said, and Prysmian is pouring $1 billion into the Claremont facility to keep up.
The expansion is much larger than the one the company considered previously but did not pursue. It will add at least 950,000 square feet to the facility and 385 jobs. Prysmian will create a new glass factory and R&D facility and grow fiber production at the site.
Data centers and adjacent industries are among the biggest demand drivers for the Claremont expansion.
