CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — Caldwell County deputies are investigating after a 3-year-old boy named Roman accidentally shot himself inside a residence on McCall Town Road.
Investigators reported the child obtained a loaded Glock 9 pistol that had been left exposed on a bedroom desk. The firearm belongs to a 20-year-old individual who resides at the home.
According to deputies, an aunt was responsible for watching the child at the residence at the time of the shooting. Relatives stated they had left the child at the home while intending to go out with friends.
Roman celebrated his third birthday one week before the shooting, according to his cousin, Misi Houston, who shared photos from the celebration. Houston stated that she believes criminal charges are warranted in the case and stressed the significance of gun safety.
Caldwell County deputies are scheduled to consult with the District Attorney to review the investigation.
Law enforcement officers initially reported the child was 2 years old, but Channel 9 confirmed the boy is 3.
