Davidson residents raise money to defend win against controversial hotel plans

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson neighbors are finding creative ways to raise $10,000 to defend their win against a controversial hotel planned for Griffith Street.

Last year, a lame duck town board approved the hotel despite fierce neighborhood opposition. In May, a judge sided with neighbors saying the town violated its own rules with the rezoning. An appeal is now being planned.

Davidson neighbors are largely opposed to the hotel because it would be built directly next to a school and the Westside Terrace homes.

"When people got plenty of money they think they can do whatever they want to and when the opponent ain't got nothing they will walk over you," longtime Davidson resident Evelyn Carr said.

Carr is planning a community yard sale at her home on 341 Griffith Street. The yard sale is Saturday, September 8 from 7 a.m. to Noon. She is asking the community to bring items to donate to sell, with all proceeds going toward court costs.

"I am praying and hoping that they don't put that hotel over there but we are going to have to fight hard," Carr said. "I am here to fight."

More than $7,000 has been raised so far. The goal is $10,000.

In court filings, the town of Davidson said the current group of town commissioners is opposed to the hotel on Griffith Street. Plans call for a four-story, 115 room Hyatt Place Hotel.
