Driver slams SUV into Hickory building after falling asleep

A driver slammed his SUV into a building in Hickory Tuesday morning after he said he fell asleep.

When firefighters arrived, the driver had already managed to climb out of the wreckage with cuts to his head and arm.

"I was just lucky I survived.  I'm happy I didn't hit the tree. I was one foot away from the tree, if I had hit the tree I don't know if I would have lived," said the driver Thor Pugh.

Police said the driver will be cited for improper lane change for the accident.

Police cleared the area because of downed power lines.

A building inspector was called to the scene at the Old Hickory Granary.

Crews removed the SUV from the building a short time later.
