Drivers frustrated at lack of repairs at Westinghouse railroad crossings

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Many people who work off Westinghouse Boulevard in Steele Creek are fed up with the condition of several railroad crossings.

They told reporter Gina Esposito that they've been asking Norfolk Southern and the city of Charlotte about the issues for months.

In May, Channel 9 reported on the crumbling conditions at one of the railroad crossings at Westinghouse Boulevard and Granite Street.

The crossing was filled with potholes, splitting wood and loose bolts.

People who work nearby said the uneven surface is damaging cars and causing accidents.

At the time, Norfolk Southern sent Esposito an email saying there were plans to replace the railroad ties and resurface the road at Granite Street.

In an email, a spokesperson also said, "We will do the work in the next few weeks or sooner."

That work hasn't happened yet.

Bobby Pressley, who drives in the area daily to get to and from work, said there are multiple tracks along Westinghouse Boulevard and South Boulevard to Steele Creek Road that are in desperate need of repairs.

When Channel 9 drove down that same stretch, our crew found several crossings that were in poor condition.

Drivers said two crossings looked like they had been repaired, but are still wondering when the rest will be fixed.

"I don’t know when they are going to get to it, but it would be nice if they did,” said Evan Andert, who lives nearby.

Channel 9 reached out to Norfolk Southern several times in the past three weeks about the delay, but officials haven’t responded.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation said it’s having a hard time, too.

"We continue to reach out to Norfolk Southern to get these repairs done,” an NCDOT spokesperson said. “We have had difficulty connecting with them, but are engaging our NCDOT Rail Division to help facilitate this effort and will advise when we have a plan and timeline."
