ESPN’s ‘The Ocho’ returning to Rock Hill with new wacky games

Axe throwing championships during ESPN's The Ocho event in Rock Hill

ROCK HILL, S.C. — ESPN is bringing its weekend of unconventional sports and games back to Rock Hill for the return of “The Ocho,” and there’s a slew of new games on the schedule.

The Ocho is a throwback to the 2004 movie “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.” In the movie, two competing gyms settle their feud in a dodgeball tournament that gets broadcast on the fictional channel “ESPN: The Ocho.”

So starting Aug. 3, ESPN2 is going to convert its branding to The Ocho and show some sports that you’d rarely see outside of niche YouTube channels.

Dodgeball is on the schedule for Saturday, Aug. 5, but ESPN is loading up two whole days worth of content featuring wacky sports, including the 2023 Corgi Races, belt sander races, OneWheel championships, and more.

Some of those games and championships will be taking place live in Rock Hill. There are events taking place at Manchester Meadows and the Rock Hill Sports and Event Center, like the Extreme Axe & Knife Games, and Slippery Stairs.

Last year, Channel 9′s Tina Terry scoped out the games when The Ocho came to town and even spotted celebrities like Flava Flav and cast members from Jersey Shore.

Officials in Rock Hill told Terry last year that they hope to give the niche sports a permanent home in South Carolina.
