Family keeps searching for Mallard Creek HS senior’s killer 3 years since her death

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The family of a Mallard Creek High School senior wants to know who killed her. Sunday marks three years since Shania Hammonds was found dead.

“How do we get any closure not knowing what happened to her, who did it and why is really my question. Why? Why would somebody want to hurt my niece?” said Shania’s aunt Monica Hammonds.

Shania was found in the backyard of a home where she was staying on Willowgate Lane.

There are so many mysteries still surrounding her death. Even the autopsy said the cause of death is undetermined, but it does note injuries around her face were consistent with an assault.

“She was intelligent. She had hopes of graduating and going off the Navy, and she talked about becoming to a veterinarian,” said Shania’s cousin Chantel Hammonds.

In 2018, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police removed the original detective from the case because of how they handled the investigation.

Now there’s a new detective on the case.

“We haven’t had any results yet after three years, even with a $15,000 reward. You would think we would have some answers, and we have none,” said Monica.

As Shania’s family searches for justice, they hope someone will come forward. There is still a $15,000 reward in this case.

“I want people to think about if it was their loved one,” said Chantel.
