No hydrants in Mint Hill neighborhood where house went up in flames

MINT HILL, N.C. — Firefighters faced a huge challenge Friday night as they battled a massive fire that has destroyed a home in Mint Hill.

They were called around 8:30 p.m. to the home on Saffir Court and discovered there were no fire hydrants in the neighborhood.

"This neighborhood, we have no fire hydrants in this neighborhood. The closest hydrant that we had was about one mile," said assistant fire chief Tommy Moore with Mint Hill Fire and Rescue.

Firefighters had to bring in a make shift pool to pump over into the house. Firefighters had to be pulled out of the home three different times because they ran out of water, according to officials.

Neighbors told Channel 9 reporter DaShawn Brown that no one was inside the home because the family was on vacation. The only injury was a firefighter who hurt his foot while battling the flames.

It took firefighters a couple of hours to get the fire under control and the remained at the scene for several hours, putting out hot spots inside the home.
