CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Dozens of people signed up to be the one to cure an 8-year-old girl in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant.
Lauren Turner is from Gastonia. Channel 9 first introduced you to her on Friday.
Lauren is battling leukemia for the third time.
The first two times Lauren received her sister's marrow. Now doctors are trying to find a different match.
Lauren has Native American in her background and only 1 percent of people on the national registry are Native American.
“We're thankful there's so many people coming out from everywhere, I mean they've been packed,” said father Ritchie Turner. “It really opens your heart up to how people are kind, and they see the sense of urgency here.”
This is the first of four bone marrow drives hosted by Charlotte's Be-The-Match program. They're still finalizing the dates of the other three.
You must be between 18 and 44 years old to become a donor.
