Former Charlotte councilwoman to begin sentence for COVID-19 relief fraud

Former Charlotte Councilwoman Tiawana Brown sentenced to prison for COVID-19 relief fraud

CHARLOTTE — Former Charlotte City Councilwoman Tiawana Brown plans to self-surrender to federal prison Wednesday, according to an announcement made in a Facebook post on Oct. 21.

On Sep. 22, a judge sentenced Brown to 10 months behind bars after she admitted to applying for COVID-19 relief funds and using them to throw herself a lavish birthday party. Previous reports suggested Brown might appeal her sentence.

Her daughters also illegally obtained money. They are getting probation.

All three will have to pay back a combined total of $137,000.

Brown was elected to City Council in 2023, becoming the first former felon to serve on the board. She had served time decades earlier on fraud-related charges.
