CHARLOTTE — A man from Honduras was shot and killed Thursday evening in an east Charlotte shopping center.
The shooting occurred just before 7 p.m. near the intersection of North Sharon Amity Road and E W.T. Harris Boulevard.
According to police, the victim was shot several times following an argument that began a few hundred yards from the shopping center.
Investigators are reviewing footage from a parking lot camera tower to collect potential evidence in the case.
Jeannie Juánez, the former partner of the victim, reached out to Channel 9 to share details about his life. Juánez and the victim share four young children together.
She stated that the family had lost touch with him for an extended period while he experienced difficult circumstances.
“We had been searching for him for about two years. We thought he was dead,” Juánez said.
Juánez explained that witnesses heard gunfire during the altercation before the victim fled toward the shopping center holding an unidentified metal object in his hand. Police later discovered his body in the parking lot.
“Then they heard gunshots, and he ran. He had a metal object in his hand. Then he ran, and police found him in the parking lot,” Juánez said.
Juánez said the victim’s death has devastated his family both locally and in his origin country of Honduras.
“My children will never have the chance to get to know him. And his mother has a heart condition and has been crying so much. Everyone in Honduras is very sad,” Juánez said.
