CHARLOTTE — Friends of a transgender woman who was murdered in the back of an ambulance in south Charlotte in March 2020 want her accused killer to stay behind bars.
Monika Diamond was being treated in an ambulance outside of the Days Inn on Woodlawn Road when she was shot and killed.

Prentiss Bess, 33, was arrested at the scene. He was in court on Thursday, where his attorney asked the judge to order a psychiatric evaluation.
Some of Diamond’s friends from the transgender community were at the courthouse and said they feel vulnerable and are watching other cases involving violence against them.

“I’m very worried,” said Jerry Broome, a friend of Diamond. “I’m very afraid, because if this person is to get out, what harm or what’s next? What harm can be done to the next transgender? What harm can be done to me?”
Police have arrested two suspects in the most recent transgender murders in Charlotte.

Joel Brewer, 33, and Dontarius Long, 21, were charged in the murders of Jaida Peterson, 29, and Remy Fennell.
They are in jail without bond.
