Girl with cerebral palsy gets new wheelchair van from community donations

FORT MILL, S.C. — The Fort Mill community came together to raise money to buy a wheelchair van for a 13-year-old girl who was born with cerebral palsy.

Auria Perry’s family, from Charlotte, had a 2005 wheelchair van with more than 165,000 miles on it. The van had engine problems, and the ramp would often stick, leaving them stranded. The door to the ramp also would malfunction and slide open while a family member was driving.

Repairs would’ve been costly, but because of fundraising efforts from All Things Possible, the Perrys got a wheelchair van worth $30,000 to make sure Auria and her family could safely get around.

The 2013 Toyota Siena, which had 62,000 miles on it, was given to the family Tuesday during a surprise presentation.

Donations came from the community, and a local business matched a grant worth $15,000.
