Habitat for Humanity receives $1M to finish townhomes on land donated by Brooks brothers

CHARLOTTE — Habitat for Humanity is receiving $1 million from a local church to help complete townhomes on land donated by late restaurant owner Scott Brooks and his brother David Brooks.

In December 2019, Scott Brooks was opening Brooks’ Sandwich House when he was ambushed, robbed and shot to death.

Before the tragedy, the Brooks brothers donated land in east Charlotte in 2018 to Habitat for Humanity to help the affordable housing crisis. Their father bought the land in the late 50s.

“My wife said, ‘Why don’t you guys donate that parcel of land to Habitat?’ I said ‘Oh gosh. bingo.’ It really hit us, this is going to be perfect,” David Brook told Anchor John Paul.

Now, after years full of pain, David Brooks is fulfilling the dream his twin brother had of helping the community.

“Looking behind me, this isn’t pain, this is pleasure. It’s going to be such a boost,” he said.

A large portion of the $1 million donation from Myers Park Presbyterian Church will now go to the construction of the townhomes.

Habitat for Humanity has plans to maximize the use of the property to build 17 affordable townhomes and several single-family houses as well.

“When we provide affordable housing, we prevent homelessness and have a bigger impact in the community,” said Patty Arcia, with Myers Park Presbyterian Church.

This will have a huge impact for a city that desperately needs affordable housing.

“It’s not about greed, it’s about glory. That’s why I want everyone to think about,” David Brooks said.

The project could start getting underway sometime this year.
