NEWTON, N.C. — Sentencing proceedings are underway at the justice center in Newton for former Newton Police Lt. Carlos Uribe, who faces more than 20 years in prison for the shooting death of 21-year-old Camden Childers.
Body and dash camera footage shown in court recorded the police chase and shooting, which occurred after Uribe’s patrol car collided with Childers’ motorcycle.
According to prosecutors, the video shows Childers attempting to surrender with his hands in the air before Uribe kicked him to the ground and shot him in the chest.
Prosecutors stated Childers was not armed at the time of the incident in June 2025.

Family members wearing shirts featuring Camden Childers viewed the body and dash camera video for the first time during the sentencing proceedings.
Ashley Martin, an aunt of Childers, described her reaction to seeing the shooting unfold on camera.
“Heartbreaking, you know. He’s my nephew getting shot. Gut-wrenching. It happened so fast,” Martin said.
Summer Childers, another aunt of Camden, also commented on the video footage and the actions of the former officer.
“It was very hard to see it happen that fast. When with what I feel like we’re taught is that police are supposed to de-escalate and there was no de-escalation,” Summer said.
Following the shooting, Uribe was interviewed by the State Bureau of Investigation.
During the interview, Uribe claimed Childers tried to grab his leg and went for his gun inches from his face. Prosecutors stated there is no evidence supporting Uribe’s account.
The video shows the police chase ending when Uribe’s patrol car and the motorcycle collided in a cul-de-sac.
Although audio recording was not permitted in the courtroom, camera audio captured Childers repeatedly saying, “I’ve been shot. I’ve been shot.” Childers later died at the hospital.
Channel 9 previously sought the public release of the body camera video late last year. A judge denied that request after prosecutors argued releasing the footage could harm the chances of a fair trial.
The judge is expected to hear statements from family members and friends on both sides as the sentencing proceedings continue. Uribe faces more than 20 years in prison.
