A Harvard University study found a consistent link between migraine headaches and major heart disease in women.
Researchers studied more than 116,000 U.S. women aged 25 to 42 from 1989 to 2011 for the Nurses’ Health Study II.
They found migraine sufferers had a 50 percent greater risk for heart attack, stroke or surgery to open blocked heart arteries.
They also found that participants with migraines had a 37 percent higher risk of dying from a heart attack or stroke.
They were 39 percent more likely to have a heart attack and 73 percent more likely to have heart surgery as well.
Lead researcher Dr. Tobias Kurth said the study does not prove that migraines cause major heart diseases, but it does show that they may make the disease more likely.
