The crash happened just before 8 a.m. at the intersection of NC Highway 10 and Cat Square Road.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol said a black car traveling west on NC Highway 10 crossed over a double yellow line to pass the car in front of it and collided with a black SUV traveling east on the highway.

“It happened so fast," witness Michael Lail said. "The car she was passing just drove on, and they hit and it was just like 'Bam.' You can see the parts in the highway.”

The driver of that car, Kenyada Sledge, is charged with careless and reckless driving.

According to officials, both drivers were pinned inside their vehicles after the crash and were transported to a hospital with serious injuries.

Channel 9's Dave Faherty was there as emergency crews worked tirelessly to rescue the two drivers from their vehicles.

Highway Patrol said a mother and her son were inside the black SUV when the vehicle overturned.

Andrea Patterson arrived at the crash moments after it happened and ran to the SUV after hearing cries for help.

“She started screaming, ‘My son, my son, my son!’ I almost panicked. I checked the car to see if she had a child in the car,” Patterson said.

Bystanders told Channel 9 they saw the child free himself after the wreck. He was not hurt.
