‘Hootin’ and hollerin’: Iredell County woman wins $1 million in lottery

HARMONY, N.C. — An Iredell County woman has a million reasons to celebrate.

Jo Anne Brown of Harmony won $1 million from a scratch-off ticket she bought at Fast Phil’s on Harmony Highway.

“I think everybody in the surrounding area knew we won. We were hootin’ and hollerin’ for sure,” Brown told officials with the North Carolina Education Lottery.

Brown scratched the ticket in the store. “We just kept screaming, ‘We are millionaires,’” Brown said. “It was like a dream.”

Brown chose the lump-sum amount of $600,000 and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $427,503.

She said she would use the money to help with her retirement.

“This money will help make that happen,” she said.

Brown said she and her husband Kerry would also use the money to help out their family and perhaps put a pond on their property so their grandkids could go fishing.
