UNION COUNTY, N.C. — So many people need help putting food on their table.
On Tuesday, hundreds of them lined up for a drive-thru food pantry in Monroe.
Organizers at Common Heart Food Pantry said it was a record-breaking turnout with about 300 families served. They served enough food to feed 1,000 people.
Volunteers told Channel 9 that many of the people reported losing jobs due to the coronavirus.
"We’ve heard a lot of stories about people losing their jobs. We’ll see people from all walks of life. Some people who have never had to go to a food pantry before,” Kara Lopp with Common Heart said.
Common Heart organized Tuesday’s event with help from a local church and Second Harvest Food Bank. To donate cash or non-perishable food items to Common Heart visit their website.
