ImaginOn to be home to Jon Stewart's ‘Daily Show' during DNC

Jon Stewart is bringing “The Daily Show” to Charlotte for the Democratic National Convention and he'll pay nearly $100,000 in rent for the week.
The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Board of Trustees announced Monday they had approved a contract allowing one of Comedy Central’s biggest names to rent ImaginOn during the DNC.
The ImaginOn is home to the library and the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte.
According to library officials, the show will record and air nightly at 11 p.m. between Sept. 4 and Sept. 7. The show will rent the facility for a guaranteed $93,000, but they could earn more.
The revenue from the show’s rental will supplement the library system’s operating budget, officials said. They money will go to services that support literacy, educational success, workforce development programs as well as support the Children’s Theatre programs.
“This revenue will support two cherished Charlotte organizations that have experienced funding challenges due to the recession,” said Library Board Chair Charles Bowman. “We are proud to highlight this positive benefit to this community.”
“We are delighted to be able to showcase such a unique and collaborative facility and partnership, not only to the convention but also to an international television audience,” said Children’s Theatre Executive Director Bruce LaRowe.
According to library leaders, the spaces “The Daily Show” is renting are not in the public areas of ImaginOn.
Tickets to "The Daily Show" tapings in Charlotte may be requested at www.thedailyshow.com. They are not available through ImaginOn’s box office.
In October of last year, the Library Board of Trustees voted to close its two uptown Charlotte locations, the main branch of the library and ImaginOn, to the public during the Democratic National Convention. Officials said the decision was due to concerns about safety, security and parking during the convention.
The Library would normally be closed Sunday, Sept. 2, and Labor Day, Monday, Sept 3.
Main and ImaginOn will likely close Tuesday, Sept 4, through Friday, Sept 7, and reopen Saturday, Sept. 8. Trustees are still sorting out the hours for the two locations during the convention.
