CHARLESTON, S.C. — (AP) A South Carolina couple is asking a federal judge for an injunction blocking enforcement of the state's constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.
Colleen Condon and Nichols Bleckley were the first couple to apply for a same-sex marriage license in Charleston County and sued last week. Late Wednesday they asked U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel for an injunction to prevent anyone from enforcing the ban.
Attorneys for the couple say the law in the 4th U.S. Circuit, of which South Carolina is a part, is clear in saying states must now allow same-sex marriage.
South Carolina has until Nov. 3 to respond to the injunction request. But Gergel meets with attorneys in Charleston on Friday to discuss how the court will proceed in dealing with the issue.
