CHARLOTTE, N.C. — On St. Patrick’s Day this year, Tryon Street in uptown will be quieter than the typical 80,000 spectators who roam the streets in green.
The Charlotte St. Patrick’s Day Parade has been canceled, the couple who founded the parade a quarter-century ago told The Charlotte Observer on Friday. The parade would have celebrated its 25th year in March.
Frank Hart, who started the parade with his wife, Linda Dyer Hart, cited his worsening Parkinson’s disease for ending the tradition. The disease Hart was diagnosed with has only intensified, despite daily medical treatment and therapy, he said.
The parade on Tryon Street was last held in 2019, as the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the event the past two years.
Dyer Hart told the Observer she will always remember the happiness the parade brought people of all backgrounds.
“It makes us really sad,” she said of having to fold the parade.
