KERSHAW, S.C. — An inmate at Kershaw Correctional Institution stabbed a correctional officer four times with a shank Monday night and held him against his will for a short period, according to a spokesperson with the South Carolina Department of Corrections.
The inmate also stole the officer’s keys and chemical munitions (tear gas), officials said. Authorities said the officer was treated for his wounds at a local hospital before being released.
Officials said the inmate also unlocked other cells and used the tear gas on himself and several other people in the living area of the prison.

Prison officials said other inmates did not participate and stayed in their cells. One inmate helped the injured officer during the scuffle.
The inmate who attacked the officer was transferred to another institution and will be charged. No names have been released.
“Our staff puts their lives at risk every day, and I’m so thankful our officer is going to be OK,” SCDC Director Bryan Stirling said.
The SCDC Office of Investigations and Intelligence is investigating the incident.
SCDC thanked the Lancaster County EMS for its quick response and the Sheriff’s Office for escorting the ambulance to the hospital.
