Lancaster County Schools leaders ask for patience in filling school bus driver positions

INDIAN LAND, S.C. — Lancaster County Schools leaders said the nationwide shortage of school bus drivers is causing some of the district’s buses to be late.

District spokesman Bryan Vaughn said he’s looking to fill three bus driver spots in the Indian Land area, three in Lancaster and three in the Kershaw area.

In the meantime, some drivers have had to take on double routes.

The school district is asking parents to be patient as officials try to fill about seven vacant bus driver positions.

“We would just ask that they be patient,” Vaughn said. “We understand (there are) some long routes out there. We would love to get folks home in 15 to 20 minutes. It’s just not possible at this time.”

Those seven vacant spots are about 9% of the district’s total bus slots.

Vaughn said the district is currently offering a $1,000 bonus to new bus drivers.

Drivers in the Indian Land area will be given a $2,500 premium each year.
