LINCOLNTON, N.C. — Two local businesses could face charges after Lincolnton police took machines and $3,000 in cash from them in an undercover sting.
The Gaston Gazette reported the businesses had updated the machines' software.
Police believe that was an attempt to get around the state's law banning the games.
Police said they used an informant to investigate games at B&B Sweepstakes and the Lincoln Business Center.
Lincoln County Sheriff's deputies are also cracking down on sweepstakes business owners.
The state Supreme Court agrees the games are illegal gambling, but many of the parlors are still open.
The sheriff's office has jurisdiction to investigate violations. For those owners, the sheriff wrote a letter spelling out a warning against "any scheme of evasion."
He also let the owners know his office has the ability to investigate the parlors.
