Local charity finalist for VH1's Do Something Awards

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A local charity is up for a big award, and it could bring $100,000 to the community.

Jillian Mourning, who runs All We Want is Love, Liberation of Victims Everywhere, is one of five finalists for the Do Something Awards, which will be on VH1 in late July. The awards honor world-changers who are 25 and under.

Mourning's charity raises awareness about sex trafficking in our community and helps rescue victims.

For the July 4 weekend, charity members are handing out soap with information about the signs of trafficking at gas stations and truck stops to help stop the trafficking of women. Mourning said if she wins, the money could go a long way.

"We're limited on the amount we can do because it was $1,500 to do about 3,000 soaps," Mourning said. "So we could do more of those. We could do larger-scale projects more often. Hopefully we'd be able to get an office space."

Mourning who also does outreach in high schools says the money would also mean more national campaigns for her Charlotte-based charity.

If she doesn't get the grand prize, her charity will still get $10,000 as a finalist.

Mourning is also working on a campaign with Paul Mitchell Schools.

This July, 16,000 future professionals from the 100-plus Paul Mitchell cosmetology schools are taking a stand for freedom. During "31 Days of Freedom" month, students and staff from Paul Mitchell the School - Charlotte will help spread awareness about this horrific situation and invite every guest who visits the school to sign the 13A Petition – a vigilant reminder of the 13th Amendment that asks President Obama to allocate additional resources to anti-trafficking efforts in the United States.

Mitchell has partnered with All We Want Is LOVE - a Charlotte based nonprofit committed to education and prevention of human trafficking and sex slavery.
