Local nonprofits step up as thousands lose SNAP benefits

CHARLOTTE — Local nonprofits are stepping up to help people impacted by recent changes to federal food relief. Thousands of people no longer qualify for SNAP benefits.

Care Ring off Graham Street is providing a lifeline for families struggling with the cost of groceries.

With fewer people receiving SNAP benefits in Mecklenburg County, this help is becoming even more important.

Every item in this cart counts for Tierra Washington.

She’s raising three children and says her SNAP benefits were canceled over an employment verification form.

“Just trying to throw meals together the cheapest way I can, really,” said Washington, a food pantry recipient. “So, they’re not eating what they’re used to eating, but they’re eating.”

She’s not the only one struggling.

Nearly 23,000 fewer people are receiving SNAP benefits in Mecklenburg County compared with the county’s average during the fiscal year ending June 2025.

“It affects it because it’s kind of like you have to take money that I was using for other stuff, bills and stuff like that, and then try to figure out food as well,” Washington said.

“Our neighbors are having to make some difficult choices, so we are here just to provide access and need for food,” said Stephanie Malloy, director of programs at Care Ring.

Care Ring partners with Nourish Up to provide groceries to families, including Washington’s.

Nourish Up says its Food Shares program served 83% more people this August while receiving half as much food through a federal program.

Groceries are only a temporary fix for Washington.

“It’s a really good help,” Washington said. “It’ll hold me over until I figure out the next move or try to get my benefits back.”

Mecklenburg County officials say SNAP recipients now must meet new work requirements to keep their benefits, including at least 80 hours of work per month or other approved activities.
