ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — Last month, Macy’s Inc. announced a significant investment for a new facility in Rowan County, representing the largest economic development win in the county’s history. Construction officially kicked off yesterday to bring the project to life.
Macy’s is investing $584 million into a 1.4 million-square-foot fulfillment center in China Grove, pledging to create 2,800 jobs there. The retailer is working with New Jersey-based developer The Silverman Group on the project, and the two sides spoke glowingly of one another at the ceremony to mark the beginning of construction. The facility is expected to be operational in the second half of 2024.
The deal for the project made it across the finish line in late March. That came after months of negotiations that led state and local governments to green-light incentives totaling over $60 million to land the project. The groundbreaking saw leaders from the town, county and state levels celebrate what they see as a transformative project — one that justifies the incentives approved.
The project is equally significant for Macy’s, company leaders claim. The facility will be the retailer’s most automated building in its supply-chain network. It will account for around 30% of total digital supply-chain capacity. Macy’s needs the facility to be online in time for the 2024 holiday season.
