Man accused of calling in false bomb threat to Caldwell County courthouse

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — A man was charged Tuesday after he allegedly called and said there was a bomb at the Caldwell County Court House, deputies said.

Deputies said they searched the property with an explosives detection dog after he made the call around 8:30 a.m. They did not find any explosive devices, according to officers.

After investigating, they determined 31-year-old Raymond Mathis made the threat.

Tuesday afternoon, deputies stopped Mathis, who was driving on Cajah’s Mountain Road, and arrested him on a charge of driving with a revoked license.

After searching him, officers said they found other people’s checks and a small bag of methamphetamine that was behind his phone case. That phone was also the phone used to call in the bomb threat, officials said.

Mathis was also charged with larceny, forgery, possession of methamphetamine and making a false bomb report to a public building.

Investigators said he was supposed to appear in District Court prior to the threat being made.

Mathis is being held at the Caldwell County Detention Center with a bail set at $255,000. He is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
