Arrest made months after 87-year-old Union County man stabbed to death

INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. — The Union County Sheriff's Office says it has made an arrest in the September 2017 killing of 87-year-old Stallings resident Simual “S.A.” Augusta Flowe.

Deputies went to Flowe's home for a welfare check and found him stabbed to death.

Investigators say they learned that Flowe owned a mobile home park and had evicted 51-year-old Stephen D. Smithson while Smithson was in the Mecklenburg County jail.

After getting out, Smithson allegedly visited Flowe to talk about a place to live and killed him during the encounter.

"Our detectives, crime scene investigators and deputies did excellent work in resolving this case. At times, it seemed as though leads had dried up but they refused to give up.  I am proud of them as well as the SBI agents who helped clear this case.  Although we can’t bring Mr. Flowe back, hopefully we can provide some closure for his family and friends," said Sheriff Eddie Cathey.

Smithson is charged with first-degree murder and a probation violation. He's being held without bond.
