Man with knife shot by Conover police during domestic disturbance

CONOVER, N.C. — A domestic disturbance in Conover early Friday morning led to a police shooting after a man armed with a knife refused to comply with officers’ commands.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:06 AM on Jan. 24, 2025, on Lylehaven Drive NW.

Police responded to a call reporting that a husband had approached his wife with a knife before leaving the residence on foot. Officers located the suspect, identified as 45-year-old Jason Wesley Ledford from Cherryville, near Hefner Drive NW and County Home Road. Ledford was armed with a knife and advanced on an officer, prompting the officer to fire, striking him in the upper extremities.

After the shooting, officers took Ledford into custody and began life-saving measures. He was initially transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center and later transferred to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. In accordance with departmental policies, the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

The investigation by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation will determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, as the officer remains on leave.
