Matthews basketball coach charged with assault, court documents say

MATTHEWS, N.C. — A local high school basketball coach has been placed on leave after being charged with assault, according to the Rock Hill Herald.

Joe Badgett, the boy’s basketball coach and assistant athletic director at Carmel Christian School in Matthews, has been charged with assault and battery.

The Herald said court documents show Badgett is accused of improperly touching a person while he and the alleged victim were working at a business in Lancaster County last year.

Carmel Christian School told the Herald that the alleged crime has no connection to them to anyone who attends their campus.

Badgett’s charge is considered a misdemeanor and he could face a maximum of three years in prison.
