Matthews considering outside engineer to tackle flooding road

Matthews’ officials said they are considering the hire of an outside engineer to pinpoint what is causing flooding at several businesses off Industrial Drive.

Multiple businesses told Eyewitness News that flooding picked up five years ago. They said heavy rainfall will flood businesses four or five times a year.

"It's very costly you know, we are owners for two buildings and this is not maintenance costs, this is heavy loss," said Britt Thomas, an owner and vice president at MTB Mechanical Inc.

Thomas said the flooding has cost around $250,000 over the past few years. He estimates he'll spend another $50,000 on a sinkhole that just formed a few days ago.

"We're paying taxes into this system and it’s antiquated, it needs to be fixed," said Thomas.

It's not clear what is causing the increased flooding, town officials said. Engineers have been on-site and have met with Thomas.

The town said it is considering paying $23,000 over six weeks for a consulting engineer to try and identify the problem and solution. Additional money would need to be spent for repairs.

"The town does not want the businesses to be harmed due to Mother Nature," said Hazen Blodgett, Matthews’ manager.

Matthews officials said there was flooding at the MTB property prior to MTB purchasing it. A Matthews engineer said it sits on a former creek, which could lead to increase water flow on the property.
