MATTHEWS, N.C. — The mayor of Matthews said he's dropping out of the race for re-election.
Channel 9 looked into the sudden decision and learned that Jim Taylor, who is employed by Wells Fargo, improperly used his Wells Fargo email account to send and receive messages related to his duties as mayor.
Wells Fargo said in an email that the bank has policies which prohibit the use of corporate email for this type of outside activity.
Matthews officials sent the following statement to Channel 9:
"Mayor Taylor has stated that any email passing through his Wells Fargo account was/is forwarded through his town account as well."
Taylor had said Tuesday that he had been thinking about it for months.
He also said he didn't want to get to a point he didn't feel like doing it any longer.
The mayor said he asked Paul Bailey to run, and he agreed.
Taylor is the Vice President of Finance in the Home Equity Segment of Wells Fargo Bank, according to the town of Matthews' website.
