CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mecklenburg County leaders are warning residents about people who posed as county property assessors in attempts to get inside homes.
There have been two incidents in which a person claimed to be a county employee doing appraisal work, officials said in a news conference Friday. The most recent case was reported Thursday morning in the Cotswold neighborhood.
The resident told a neighborhood resource officer that someone went to their home and said they needed to come inside to see how many bedrooms and bathrooms were in the home.
The homeowner knew it was a scam and wouldn’t let the person inside.
“In my four years here, this is the first time that we’ve gotten a call like this, that hat it was not one of our staff members there where someone was questioned. So it’s not a usual occurrence,” Mecklenburg County assessor Ken Joyner said.
The county assessor said appraisers will call and set up an appointment if they need to come inside a home. He also said homeowners will be able to easily identify a county worker by their vehicle or clothing. The worker will also have identification on them.
The county assessor said if residents see anything unusual, they should call police.
