CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mecklenburg County commissioners approved its $1.7 billion budget, which includes a hike in property taxes.
It will be the county's first property tax increase in five years.
That tax increase comes out to be about $18.75 more a year for homes worth $250,000.
The budget includes funding that will kick-start universal pre-K.
The county will use $9 million to add 33 pre-k classrooms and serve 600 children.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools requested an additional $40 million from county commissioners.
The school district will get an extra $31 million this year, which will enhance school security and boost teacher pay.
The budget also provides just more than $5 million so the county can enhance its cybersecurity efforts in wake of a cyberattack last year
