Crisp's wife Amanda talked about not only the support she's gotten from fellow law enforcement officers but people across the foothills, some she doesn't even know.

"Today is a hard day,” Amanda Crisp said. “Being the one year anniversary. The Lord has taken care of us and surrounded us by family and friends and people who love Jason."

Some of those people include his closest friends with the U.S. Forest Service who worked to place a permanent memorial a few hundred yards from where he lost his life.

Shortly after setting it there, his two sons were the first to place flowers around it followed by their mother and other family members.
"We stay together and we lean on each other to get us through,” Amanda Crisp said. “And they give me strength.”

But Amanda also wants people to know how important the community support for her family means to her.

She said that support reminds her of Jason the most.

"I think it reflects who Jason was and the kind of person he was,” Amanda Crisp said. “I think it shows with everybody who is here. He was not just a law enforcement officer. He was a friend."

There was a moment of silence announced in Burke and McDowell counties just before 3 p.m. to coincide with the time when Crisp was killed.

In 2014, Crisp was honored by the Forest Service for his display of bravery and commitment to uphold public safety.

His name was added to a memorial at the Burke County Courthouse.

North Carolina lawmakers also approved renaming a ranger station in Nebo the Jason Crisp Forest Service Building.
The Crisp’s family was given a new German shepherd puppy to honor him and Maros.
