MATTHEWS, N.C. — A portion of a busy road in Matthews was blocked for hours Friday morning after a tree fell, taking down power lines.
Officers had Monroe Road closed, between Sardis Road North and Matthews Township Parkway, after the tree came crashing down just before 5 a.m.

Duke Energy crews were called to fix the downed lines, and police were able to reopen the road at 9 a.m.
More than 140 customers were without power in the area, but Duke crews were able to restore it by 8 a.m.
