CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The principal at Myers Park High School has been suspended with pay, according to a message sent to parents. This comes amid public backlash for how the school handled claims of sexual assaults on campus.
“Hello Myers Park High School Staff and Families. This is an important message from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. We are calling to inform you that Principal Bosco is suspended with pay. An interim principal will be assigned and we will communicate with you upon that assignment,” the message read.
For weeks, Charlotte-Mecklenburg School district parents and students have called on principal Mark Bosco to resign.
Bosco just recently returned to campus after being on medical leave for weeks. He’s under fire for his handling of multiple sexual assault cases. Hundreds of people have signed a petition calling for his removal.
Two former Myers Park High School students sued CMS, claiming they were sexually assaulted near the school and officials never did anything.
Once they went public, the former students said more people came forward with similar stories, and said they discovered that CMS has repeatedly covered up cases of sexual assault.
Bosco’s contract has been in limbo. In July, school leaders renewed the contract of dozens of principals, but Bosco was not on the list despite his contract expiring June 30.
CMS blamed an administrative oversight for the error and said his contract would be renewed at the next meeting, which is Tuesday. It’s unclear now if that will happen.
Bosco has been a CMS employee for nearly 20 years. His current salary is about $150,000 a year.
At this point, it’s not clear why he was suspended or if it has anything to do with the reported sexual assaults.
CMS confirmed that retired South Mecklenburg High School principal, Dr. Maureen Furr, will be the interim principal at Myers Park High School for the start of the school year.
