Mystery donor drops gold coin worth $1.5K into Shelby Salvation Army kettle

SHELBY, N.C. — It’s that time of year again, and someone left a very generous donation in a Salvation Army kettle in Shelby, North Carolina.

The Salvation Army said someone dropped a 50-peso gold coin from Mexico in a kettle outside the Hobby Lobby on Saturday.

The coin was wrapped in a note so the donor could stay anonymous.

The note said, “Amid the difficulties of the pandemic, isolation, and uncertainty, thank you for making a difference in the lives of others by sharing the love of Jesus Christ. May others be inspired to give generously to share this message, and help those in need.”

The organization said they are overwhelmed by the donor’s generosity and the continued generosity from the community.

“COVID-19 has created challenges for many people in our community and our most vulnerable neighbors are feeling the biggest impacts of the pandemic,” Sergeant Les Ashby of The Salvation Army of Cleveland and Rutherford counties said. “This gift will go a long way to help them. Thank you to the donor of this coin. We are overwhelmed and grateful for your generosity and for the generosity of the community.”

The coin is valued between $1,200 and $1,500.
