CHARLOTTE — An annual ranking by U.S. News & World Report that seeks out the nation’s top-performing public high schools has identified a magnet school in Gastonia as the best in the Charlotte metro area.
Highland School of Technology takes the top spot among local public high schools in U.S News’ 2021 ranking, which was released Tuesday. It is the only school in the Charlotte region that’s considered one of the 10 best in North Carolina, landing at No. 8. Nationally, it places at No. 316.
Highland School moved up from third place on U.S. News’ list in 2020.
Two Fort Mill schools — Nation Ford High and Fort Mill High — rank among the 10 top high schools in South Carolina, at No. 6 and No. 8, respectively. Their local ranks come in lower — Nation Ford High School places at No. 11 and Fort Mill High School at No. 13 of the 107 high schools ranked in the Charlotte metro this year.
Cato Middle College High School in Charlotte, which registered as the top local school in 2020, went unranked this year. That’s due to a lack of state assessment data that’s needed to calculate the assessment ranking indicators, according to a spokeswoman with U.S. News.
