GASTONIA, N.C. — On Tuesday, the Gastonia Fire Department was awarded a Class 1 fire protection rating from the North Carolina Department of Insurance and the State Fire Marshal.
The award was given during a ceremony and puts the Gastonia Fire Department among the top one percent of departments in North Carolina.
At the ceremony, State Fire Marshal Mike Causey acknowledged the award as a big day for not only the city of Gastonia but the state of North Carolina.
“People don’t realize what it means to get to a Class 1 rating. Sometimes there may be a half-point difference between a Class 1 or Class 2 rating,” Causey said.
Since 1995, the Gastonia Fire Department’s rating has been improving, going from a Class 4 to a Class 3 that year. In 2018, the rating improved again, bringing the department up to a Class 2 rating before this year’s Class 1 rating.
