STATESVILLE, N.C. — The North Carolina Department of Transportation closed one lane of I-40 West and the Meacham Road bridge in Iredell County on Friday to perform an emergency bridge inspection.

Engineers discovered damage from an apparent bridge strike to the underside of the Meacham Road structure over I-40, located between Exits 150 and 148, just before noon. Officials closed both the bridge and the right lane of I-40 West near the structure to ensure inspectors can safely assess the damage.

Drivers affected by the Meacham Road closure can use a detour route following Gregory Road, N.C. 115 (North Center Street) and Northside Drive.

Transportation officials advised drivers to check DriveNC.gov or follow NCDOT on social media for real-time travel updates.

The right lane of I-40 West is expected to reopen Friday afternoon once the emergency inspection is finished.

Meacham Road will remain closed near the bridge until engineers determine it is safe for travel.
