New plans for historic Excelsior Club site unveiled following demolition

CHARLOTTE — The land is now vacant, but memories and big ideas now fill the air of the one-time home of the Excelsior Club.

“I was at the Stellar Awards this weekend talking to Shirley Caesar, and she was telling me she performed there and was wondering what was happening with the construction,” Councilman Malcolm Graham said.

Right now, not much is happening at the site. The building was demolished last month, and construction of the new nightclub will start when Charlotte City Council gives its blessing. Council held a public hearing about the project Monday night.

“We are working to rebuild a building on the site that was there for over 80 years,” Land Use Consultant Bridget Grant said.

The green space behind the property will be converted to parking with a buffer to protect the neighboring homes. The actual building will be 40 feet tall.

Plans call for a modern, near replica of the old building with the same Art Deco design and a rooftop terrace.

It will be a community resource with space for meetings, forums, and a museum. At night, it will transform into a restaurant and lounge.

Councilman Malcolm Graham hopes it will be a destination for the west side.

“Maybe in a couple years, if Stellar comes back, we can have some good Gospel Music down there as well,” he said.

The developers are planning to upgrade a couple nearby sidewalks to make them ADA accessible. They are also planning to replace and upgrade the Washington Heights sign.
