‘No swimming’ advisory issued for portion of Lake Norman following sewage spill

LAKE NORMAN, N.C. — A “No Swimming” advisory has been issued for a portion of Lake Norman.

The advisory was issued Wednesday after an estimated 300 gallons of untreated sewage was released into the lake near the end of Shearwater Point Drive in Cornelius. The spill was caused by a broken sewer line serving a private residence, according to officials.

The pipe has since been repaired.

Rusty Rozzelle, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services' Water Quality Program Manager, said the advisory is standard procedure.

“Since Lake Norman is heavily used for recreation, it is important to inform residents of the sewage discharge and advise against swimming in the impacted area due to the potential risk to human health,” Rozzelle said.

Officials said Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services staff will monitor water quality in the area until conditions are deemed safe for human contact. Once safe, the no swimming advisory will be lifted.
