Nonprofit helps 115 local families through 'Cone Weed' shirt sales

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The infamous Huntersville “Cone Weed” helped 115 local families have a Merry Christmas this year.

The weed growing out of a traffic cone became a local attraction in early November when people began decorating it with lights and tinsel and placed presents under it.

The charity HopeMatch said it sold 1,400 T-shirts with a Cone Weed design and added that the profits, with a matching grant, led to $21,000 to help families in need.

On Monday, staff members from HopeMatch called the Cone Weed initiative a blessing.

"God can use anything to bless those he wants to and Christmas and stuff like that, but he used a weed, and that just blows my mind," said Brian Blackmore with HopeMatch.

HopeMatch isn't stopping after the holidays.

Over the next year, the nonprofit will offer the 115 families programs including financial planning, fun outings and a school supply drive.
