North Carolina to receive $1.54 Billion from Bipartisan Infrastructure Law

NORTH CAROLINA — The President Biden Administration is sending $1.54 billion to North Carolina from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that will help improve roads, bridges and more.

President Joe Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law provides a $15.4 billion increase in national funding. It goes directly to North Carolina and all 50 states, including D.C. and Puerto Rico.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration recently announced it has released $1.54 billion Fiscal Year 2023 apportionments for 12 formula programs, in a release Tuesday. The money will help support investments in critical infrastructure such as roads, bridges and tunnels, carbon emission reduction, and safety improvements.

The money is also available to improve the condition of about 1,300 bridges in poor condition and will help preserve and improve about 9,725 bridges in fair condition in the state, that are at risk of falling into poor condition, according to the release.

North Carolina will directly receive the funds, which will provide flexibility to transportation leaders within North Carolina.

“America’s roads and bridges are the vital arteries of our transportation system, connecting people and goods across the country,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said. “Because of President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, today we are sending historic levels of funding to every state to help modernize the roads and bridges Americans rely on every day.”

The distribution of the money is as follows:

National Highway Performance Program: $772,579,357

Surface Transportation Block Grant: $375,849,417

Highway Safety Improvement Program: $80,520,985

Railway-Highway Crossings Program: $7,083,996

Congestion Mitigation & Air Quality Program: $56,960,416

Metropolitan Planning: $7,827,005

National Highway Freight Program: $36,893,317

Carbon Reduction Program: $33,513,240

PROTECT Formula Program: $38,106,955

National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program: $23,221,608

Appalachian Development Highway System: $16,754,187

Bridge Formula Program: $98,692,801

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is the single largest dedicated investment since the construction of the Interstate Highway System in the 1950s and 60s.

South Carolina is set to receive nearly $1 billion for improvements in their state.
