North Carolina Transportation Museum reopens with outdoor exhibits

SPENCER, N.C. — The North Carolina Transportation Museum is welcoming visitors back to its grounds for outdoor-only self-guided walking tours.

For a reduced cost, visitors can check out the new “Transportation Trail” featuring some of the museum’s best exhibits on display, including steam and diesel locomotives, automotive and trucking exhibits and fire trucks.

The trail is designed as a one-way directional path through the museum’s 60-acre grounds.

To ensure the safety of staff and visitors, hand sanitizer stations have been added and high touch areas will be cleaned frequently. Protective barriers have also been added at ticket sales and information desks. Tickets can also be purchased online and at a drive-up booth at the museum. The gift shop will be open but with limited capacity. Restrooms will be sanitized multiple times throughout the day as well.

The museum is also encouraging visitors to follow the “Three Ws” outlined by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services: “wear” a cloth face covering; “wait” in line at least 6 feet away from others; and “wash” hands frequently or use hand sanitizer.

The museum’s buildings, children’s play area and picnic shelters will be closed, and train and turntable rides will not be offered at this time.

Tours cost $3 per person for ages 3 and older. Children 2 and younger are admitted free.

The museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
