Novant Health, Hornets unveil progress on new Uptown practice facility

CHARLOTTE — The Novant Health Performance Center in Uptown is beginning to take shape.

For now, it’s hard hats, steel and concrete, but once construction is complete, the site will be the Charlotte Hornets’ home off the court.

“This project I could not be more excited about,” Dr. Sid Fletcher, Novant Health’s senior vice president and president of employer solutions, said. “You’re about to see what happens when the vision comes to life.”

Channel 9’s Miana Massey got a first look of the facility on Friday, where crews are building the spaces that will become practice courts, training and recovery areas for the Hornets.

Plans call for a 100,000-square-foot practice facility and 35,000-square-feet of team offices.

“We want to build a premier NBA and entertainment franchise, and to do that, we need world-class facilities,” Shelly Cayette-Weston, the president of business operations at Hornets Sports & Entertainment, said.

The center won’t just be for athletes. Its ground floor will include an orthopedic and sports medicine clinic for the community along with a retail space and plaza.

“For more than 25 years, Novant Health and the Charlotte Hornets have had this commitment to health, wellness and excellence, and that partnership, you’re seeing that come to fruition today,” Fletcher said.

As the building rises in Uptown, leaders say they see it as an investment in both the team and the region.

“Charlotte is a great, fast-growing city, and there’s so much momentum going on that impacts counties throughout this region,” Cayette-Weston said. “This facility is another sign of that.”

The center is expected to open next spring. It will put training, recovery and medical care under one roof directly across from the Spectrum Center.
